Here's our Alex in Wonderland's story and a delightful story it is! Alex is from Australia and we are always glad to see her posts. Thank you Alex.
How I got involved with birds...
I first got thinking about birds about 2 years ago when my boyfriend, who I was semi living with at the time, was moving from a share house to an apartment on his own. After seeing a talking parrot in a pet shop (I think it was an Eclectus) I jokingly said "Hey, you should get a parrot for company and someone to talk to!" Then a little light bulb flicked on in my head..... maybe I should get a parrot!
I started researching parrots online, just out of interest at first, then I started becoming enchanted by their cute little faces, and the hilarious antics they seemed to get up to. I had pretty much moved myself into my boyfriend's apartment by then, so I spoke to him about it and he seemed to think it was a good idea. I wanted to start out with a small parrot, so I researched and researched and I decided a Green Cheek Conure was the parrot for me!
I started looking for parrots for sale, and what sort of things I would need to buy for my new baby and eventually I heard from a pet shop who said that they had a little GCC for sale. I went there (it was quite a drive) and saw this gorgeous little bird and I totally fell in love. I took him home (along with a cage, toys and food), named him Caesar, and the rest, as they say, is history!
I hope to get at least one more parrot in the future, but only when I am a fully qualified teacher, and able to have my own place and enough money and stability to support two parrots. But I'm having fun thinking about it for now....

Thanks Alex.
That's how it all starts! Sensible to hold off on another bird until you are established

Hahahaha! Best pun ever!
I'd like to win the lottery and buy a house in the area I live in now (inner city-ish, there are still house with gardens though, I love it) and construct some kind of free flight area over the garden (I'll be a millionaire - someone else can figure out the logistics) and have a couple of big birds, macaws or something. That would be my dream...sigh

What's a "gateway" bird? Just because they are small doesn't mean they are any different from other parrots. You still require the same amount of knowledge to care for them. I've heard of Tiels being called "beginner" birds. Same goes for them. Size is irrelevant in the bird world.

I think often beginners buy small birds such as keets and tiels because they are much more affordable than the the larger birds. As the owners find out how much fun the birds are they want to own some of the other parrots available. ----Yogi

Little birds are the "gateway" to bigger birds, like pot is the "gateway drug" to harder drugs.

Becky - after working with birds for over 70 Years I "know" what a "gateway" bird is - - I just don't like the expression as there is a connotation that they are throwaways. Just being a grumpy old man
